Uniform Standard of Dress
Approved by the Scottsdale Governing Board-June 7, 2005 (Revised May, 2008)

Standard of Dress
Cheyenne Traditional School has a standard of dress for kindergarten through eighth grade students.  The standard of dress gives the school a positive and distinctive identity and reflects the values of the school and community.  Students are required to conform to the dress standard each day. 

Section I. Uniform Requirements and Guidelines

A. Uniform Requirements.  Kindergartners through eighth grade students are restricted to the following clothing: 

1. TOPS:  solid color (white, light blue or navy blue) and collared with long, 3/4 or short sleeves with the approved Cheyenne Traditional School logo or with no logos or gold shirts with the CheyenneTraditional School logo.   Fridays:  Students can choose to wear an approved spirit day t-shirt in lieu of the regulation uniformed collared shirt.

2. BOTTOMS:  solid color (light khaki or navy blue).  
Boys:  Pants or shorts.             Girls: Pants, capris, shorts, skirts, skorts or jumpers. 

B. Additional Guidelines.  In addition to the uniform requirements set forth above, the following specific guidelines shall apply:

1. All skirts, pants, capris, skorts and shorts need to be worn at the waist at all times and may not be oversized/undersized and hemmed.  Boys’ shorts may not extend past the kneecap.  Girls’ skirts, skorts, shorts and jumpers must reach at least mid-thigh length.

2. All shirts and blouses must be hemmed, appropriately buttoned and tucked in at all times.

3. Any shirt worn underneath the approved uniform shirt must be plain, solid white and may not extend past the exterior sleeve length. Mock or full turtlenecks are not allowed.

4. All shoes must be fully closed (front and back), matching, properly tied and cannot have a heel higher than one inch.

5. Socks must be matching and may not extend onto or above the knee.  Tights, footless tights and leggings must be solid white or solid navy blue.

6. No jewelry, other than small stud earrings or watches, may be worn (Grades K-5).  Grades 6 thru 8:  One necklace, one watch or bracelet, one ring and one set of earrings (studs only) may be worn. Wristbands/sweatbands/wrist cuffs are not allowed.
a. Exemptions are not necessary for patriotic or religious expressions as long as it adheres to the S.U.S.D Uniform Code of Student Conduct.

7. Baseball caps or other headwear (including hoods on jackets) may not to be worn inside buildings. Baseball caps worn outside of buildings must have the bills facing forward.

8. No hairnets, knit stocking caps, bandanas, or scarves may be worn.

9. No makeup, lip-balm may be worn (Grades K-5).  Grades 6 thru 8:  Light and natural color make-up will be allowed.  Light and natural color nail polish will be allowed (Grades K-8).  Tattoos, or nail art may not be worn (Grades K-8).

10. Hair must be neatly groomed, with no extreme cuts, styles or coloring.

11. Outerwear may not be oversized.  Uniforms must still comply under the student’s outerwear. Winter wear worn inside the classroom must be a sweatshirt or sweater (CTS logo or no logo) consisting of a solid single color (white, light blue or navy blue).

12. Principal approved organizations (i.e.: Brownies/Girl Scouts, Cub/Boy Scouts, CTS Athletics) may be allowed to wear their uniform on the day of the event.
Section II. Exemptions

A. Application for Exemption.  Families desiring not to follow the standard of dress may apply for an exemption.  To exercise that option, the parent or guardian must provide a written statement identifying the reason(s) that the student should be exempt from the standard of dress policy.  The following reasons may be taken into consideration:

1. Religious

2. Undue financial hardship

3. Medical


Whether to grant a partial or complete exemption is within the discretion of the CTS principal or assistant principal.  Exemptions will be based on individual circumstances and granted only for the school year in which the application is made.  All applications for exemption (with the exception of medical) must be made within 30 days of the first day of that student’s attendance.  All students who have not been granted an exemption must be in compliance with the standard of dress within 45 days of the first day of attendance. 

B. Non-Discrimination.  The District or CTS will not discriminate against any student granted an exemption to the standard of dress policy. 

Section III. Interpretation and Violations

A. Interpretation.  CTS administration or teachers may question the dress of any student.  The CTS principal or assistant principal will have complete and final judgment on all matters concerning interpretation of the standard of dress policy.  Matters concerning appearance and dress not specifically covered in the standard of dress guidelines shall be within the discretion of the principal or assistant principal, (Reference: Uniform Code of Student Conduct) as follows: 
Immodest or distracting dress or appearance of any type is not permitted.  This is not confined to clothing, but also includes fads in hairstyles, makeup or other attractions that would, in the opinion of the principal or assistant principal, tend to promote student disruption, jeopardize student conduct or otherwise interfere with the educational process.  Clothing or appearance will be considered inappropriate if, in the judgment of the principal or assistant principal, it (Presents a risk to the health, safety or general welfare of the students, staff, or others;

1. Interferes with or disrupts the educational environment or process;

2. Is counterproductive to the curriculum goals or educational objectives;

3. Produces disorder or creates an atmosphere of threat, intimidation or undue pressure; or

4. Causes excessive wear or damage to school property.


B. Consequences for Violation.  As set forth in the Uniform Code of Student Conduct, consequences for violation of the standard of dress may include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. The student may be required to:

a. Turn inappropriate clothing inside out;
b. Change into clothing that may be provided by the school;
c. Have other clothing brought to school; or
d. Remove the accessory.

2. Suspension from school.

3. Discipline in accordance with any other provision of Article B of the Uniform Code of School Conduct that is violated as a result of the dress code infraction
